Hockey is the most amazing sport. Unfortunately in society these days teams sports are not as sports where individuals rule the game and can be hyped. Hockey has just changed it's rules in hopes that the star individuals can shine more and not have thier stick held or have thier skating interefered with. ESPN almost single handedly destroyed hockey. Because it tried to market the individuals and not the teams. When ESPN aired hockey they only showed 6 teams because of the players on them. Colorado (Forsberg, Sakic),
Detroit (Yzerman, Shanahan), Dallas (modano), Rangers (Messier), Flyers (Lindros), Penguins(Lemieux). Hockey is the consumate team sport. Marketing the individuals was a mistake and still will be. However, people arent interested if they dont have a Shaq, Lebron, or a Ladanian Tomlinson or a Peyton Manning or a Derek Jeter etc. The other sports reward the individual superstar much more. Especially basketball. Where it only takes two great people on the roster to win a championship. Football is a team sport as well. But, the quarterback, running back and widereciever get all the glory. Only recently has the offensive line recieved the focus it has been getting do to the constant anlysis that can be found 24-7 on t.v. in regards to football. Back in the seventies no one could name the Steelers offensive line players except the die hard steeler fans. Baseball is stat driven and the media can take its temperature on a daily basis. Records are always being set on a yearly basis. Hockey is a team sport and so is soccer. It seems only Europe embraces the concept of hyping teams and not players. In America people only know Manchester U. Why? Beckham. Now they think he will save soccer in america. Nope. the first 0-0 game he plays in will end that hype. Hockey now will try to help its superstars by protecting them from holding and stick grabbing, possibly expanding the net. It wont work. Hockey at it's greatest popularity was in the seventies. When it was a team game. The scrappy guys were the heroes. The guys who bled and fought and scratched. When teams fought together. When helmets werent worn so you can identify with a guys intensity. America needs to know its players. America needs 24-7 breakdowns and analysis. Hockey has too many nuances and most games are won by pure heart and determination. Most anlalysts will come off stupid. Like last year when the number eight Edmonton made it to the cup. America loves the predictabilty of teams like the Bulls, Yankees and Patriots. Where Jordan, Jeter and Brady wont let them down. When is the last time a number one or two seed wasnt the winner of the NBA??? America has become spoiled and the NHL knows it. It wants to know who is great and have them be predictably great every night. It doesnt want someone like Sean Avery nailing Sydney Crosby into the boards and hurting him. It doesnt want the trap to hold back the stars from scoring and it doesnt want Marty Brodeur to shut down the penguins in the regular season or especially in the first round of the playoffs. Just like baseball doesnt want a Twins/Marlins World Series. It wants the Yanks and Dodgers. But baseball is fine it wont change the sport around to ensure that from happening yet. But the salary structure still lets the yanks spend enough to field a great team year in and year out. Hockey will destroy itself. But the team sport I love so much will always be remembered by those who appreciate the team not the player. Let's go Islanders!!!!

I'll tell you why hockey is amazing because it is a very fast paced intense game that requires finesse and creativity and the players in hockey need to be excellent with both their hands (stick handling) and their feet (skating) alot more than any other sport. Whenever a goal is scored its usually a sight to behold and when you see those goalies make those athletic incredible saves and you see Crosby scoring those breathtaking shootout goals you can see what hockey is about. The beauty of the execution of a passing play that leads to a goal and the whole concept of powerplays, odd man rushes, 5-3z and sudden death overtimes make the game the most exciting in the world. When the playoffs come around and the Stanley cup is won you know every player worked their *** off to win that cup and the playoff atmosphere and intensity take hockey to a whole new level where the stakes are higher and the cost of winning even higher. The fact that grown men can fight out on the ice and leave everything out there and after the game they act like their friends. The most talented players play in hockey look at Gretzky who produced th numbers in one season equivalent to two seasons with his 200 point seasons no other player in any other sport has produced the numbers of one season in two seasons.I could go on and on . . .

Soccer plays 90 minutes and they get what 12 shots on goal total - that's a shot every 7.5 minutes.
Hockey goes 60 minutes and 60 shots on net or one every minute
Easy to see there's more action in hockey.
Not being able to follow the puck is a problem particular to those who've never laced on skates and chased a puck aound on a rink. In Canada we do it from the time we're 3 for the most part so we've grown up with it. It's not that hard.
How many people actually can follow the ball off a golfer's club?
And tennis, back and forth, small ball moving fast but people can see it once they're conditioned to it.
Add the physical play and all the passing and end to end rushes and there' no doubt hockey is exciting. But like caviar, it's an acquired taste.

Hockey is amazing because it combines speed, violence, sheer skill, and luck into one (not so much anymore) face paced game. It is amazing because the athletes work a lot harder than other mainstream sports and get paid a hell of a lot less for it.

As for Soccer, it takes a lot of endurance, but make the net about ten feet smaller and then complain about how hard it is to score. Also, if you can't see the puck on a 50' television, it's probably because you are used to seeing a soccer ball. Once you actually watch a few games of hockey the puck isn't an issue. Trust me I usually watch it on my 27" and see it just fine.

Hockey is a fast paced hard hitting contact sport and it is the hardest to score a goal in because everyone is born with the ability to run on their feet and kick a ball. Not every person has the ability to hit that small object with a bent stick on a sheet of ice with a knife blade strapped to their feet and moving at about 50mph. Soccer is a hard sport to score in and when you think about it ,it is Hockey but played with your feet.Almost the same zones etc.. but less than half the speed.

Yes hockey is amazing. Its the only sport like it. People say its like soccer, but its not. Besides the fact that it actually inquires a lot more skill..if the hockey players were actually soccer players theyd all be on the floor crying. I actually have NO CLUE why it doesnt get that much attention..and it pisses me off. i guess people are just blind.

Hockey is so amazing because it's quick and dynamic and passionate. The game has flow and it holds your attentions when you watch unlike other sports. Football is abrupt the game stops every minute. Soccer is slow and the field is too big. Basketball just plain sucks because fouls are given out for looking at your opponent and non of the baskets even matter for anything till the last minute. Baseball is about peanuts and crackerjacks. Golf...................................................................
Hockey players get into less trouble than other professional sport athletes. They play with honor and courage and when they put on their gear they become the modern gladiator.

I agree that hockey is a great sport. They don't get the mainstream attention because the people that are running the NHL, don't really know how to market the sport.
