Since WW II.. when America could no longer be an isolationist nation... we have always had that "evil" nation or ideology that was out to destroy us.. at least in our own minds... is America as a nation just paranoid? I mean seriously... the Cold War and Communism... now Radical Islam and the Middle East... and they are already trying to prep China as our next big enemy in 30-40 years... Paranoia... is it everywhere.. or am I just paranoid... :P

Like Bill Maher said, the USA has become a big, lumbering, stupid bully. If we're not suffering "brain drain" from the business sector, I'm sure we're suffering it from the science and technology sector (seeing as how we have an administration that actively attacks it.)
Big, lumbering monsters feel like they have big targets on their back, and when you send a huge percentage of your defense forces out of the country, it's not strange to feel a bit porous and unprotected. Hence paranoia.

I think the post-WWII economy has relied heavily on bogeymen the gov't. has provided. Stalin and the USSR. The evils of communism in SE Asia. The Ayatollah in Iran, Hussein, etc. The list keeps growing because we have such a large military/weapons industry. Amazing the amount of money we spend. And it's on big-ticket items that some argue have no relevance in the war we're fighting now and for the foreseeable future. One (1) F-22 fighter would pay for all HMMWV's and Soldiers in Iraq to be up armored - affording them a standard of protection. Did we cancel the contract? Are all our HMMWV's up armored? You have the answer. Just watch how they spin the bogeyman - they're already starting to beat the war-drum over Iran . . .

It's you. These are real threats that should not be ignored. I prefer to live in a free country and there is a price for our freedom.

Probably. and some Presidents, Bush in particular, exploit it to enhance their power and influence.
