Find a Keirsey Temperment test online and take it. Then read about your "type" You may find that to be helpful in discovering yourself. I had the same feelings as you, but when I took the test and discovered my type (INFP) and started reading about me, a lot of things started making sense and I started understanding myself a lot better. It's very interesting...and if you want to get more indepth with it, there are two books, "Please Understand Me" and "Please Understand Me II" that are absolutely fascinating.
Good luck!

well...stop looking for the answer and you will find it. It sounds corny but its true. I went through this too to the point of depression but once I stopped trying to please everybody and be their Friend my life changed for the better. You will never really know what someone else thinks about you. There is a theory called "The looking glass self"(I think-it's been a long time since I took sociology in college). The point is...we see ourselves the way we think other people view us. Since it is impossible to know what someone else is thinking we imagine what it might be. Therefore the way we view ourselves is completely distorted.
Re-evaluate your emotions and think about why you feel the different ways that you do. Is it because you have picked up bad habits from your parents? Have you formed unrealistic goals for yourself? Have you created a fantasy about the way your life should be? The bad emotional habits that you have acquired may not be your fault but you are the only and best person to change them. You have to take charge and realize that you are in control. Your going to make a million bad decisions but you will also make ones you and others will be proud of. The things you do in this life define you. Stop thinking about the answer, go about your life and it will come to you.

The first step is realize this and wanting to change it. And it's a big step since most people go through life acting just like some other idiot. So congratulations are certainly in order here.

I would recommend spending time alone and focus on not caring what other people think of you. Write down some things that you want, things that make your day better and feel happy. While doing this don't even think about what someone else might say about it, just write it down on a list.

Ive been there and I still am there, its very complicated but the only thing about it is, its actually a good thing, allow me to explain. So far as what other people think, im going to be as clear and precise as i can when i type this F**K WHAT ANYBODY THINKS OF YOU. Thats the first step to finding yourself, just take time out and focus on you, find out what you really like and love it. See, people that are in your set of mind or unique, because you have certain qualities others might not posess. So far as not knowing yourself, TRUST, you know who you really are. Dont let other individuals define who you are, cause if you do. Your most definitely going down the wrong track. You are unique, accept it, be it, love it.

I have been in the same situation most of my life, though in my case it is more trying to stop negative feedback before it ever happens. I started therapy last fall and have recently been taking a class on co-dependency...it is helping me and may help you too.
