You can try human hair, this will keep away most of the animals and provide some fertilizer and water retention for your plants. barbers will gladly give you the hair probably for nothing and free is pretty cost efficient. Hair is safe for the environment and does not emit an odor and will keep the deer away.

We gardened an acre in the country where there were hundreds of deer. I have yet to see an effective deterrent that didn't cost more than the gardening was worth. We just put up 6 foot fencing and never had any more problems.

Some may claim success with various chemicals or devices, but we've never seen any that work or were worth the money.

Put up fencing and solve the problem for good.

Deer Deterent = Make a solution of: 1 Tablespoon Cayenne Pepper, 3 Tablespoons of Kelp. 3 Tablespoons of liquid hand soap, 1/2 Teaspoon Peppermint Oil, 1pint of warm water. Place mixture in a spray bottle and spray areas where deer frequent. Do not use on plants that you will be consuming.

Planting from lists of deer-proof plants often results in disappointment. What's deer-proof in one area may not be in another. And if deer are really hungry, they'll eat almost anything. If you live in an area where deer are common, check with local nurseries, public gardens in your region, or the nearest Cooperative Extension Service office for advice and planting solutions.

Invest in electric fence for the perimeter of the property, place wires at best proximity for repelling deer. An electric "ticker" box and wire is an inexpensive answer. Good luck! The sonic devices I want no part of, if it's audible to birds it is to dogs and cats and maybe even our mind, who needs that? I've heard marigolds keep rabbits and deer away, however my Mother-in-law says they eat hers! And she has put fence around all gardens 6ft.! And all trees too! I would try the electric fencing. But read this too----Electric fencing is used frequently by orchardists and managers of tree nurseries. Strips of aluminum foil smeared with peanut butter affixed to electric fencing lure deer to the fence where they lick the peanut butter and get a shock. Electric fences attached to a higher voltage charger can deter deer because they can hear the hum of the charge through the wires without touching them. However, electric fences may not be suitable for urban uses, especially when children are present.

Check this link for a discussion of several kinds of electric fence and how to build them.

Use a product called Liquid Fence. You can get it from Lows. Just follow the instructions and spray it on plants. It smells terrible but it keeps deer and rabbits away.

My grandma used to go the the local beauty parlor and ask them to keep the scraps of human hair that fell on the floor after ladies had their hair cut. She would take this human hair and tie it in bundles, Deer hate the smell of humans.
