hi my 98 mk3 astra heater fan has stopped working on the first 2 settings and the last 2 settings work fully. I have put a meter on the switch for a quick test and i get a connection from 1-4 on the switch so im stuck, im reading about the motor resistor and wondered if it could be that. interestingly all 3 centre panel bulbs have blown to. cheers for any help..pj

that'll be the resistor. 4 will always work because it doesnt use the resistor, and 3 just isnt broken yet. 1&2 are always first to go. i cant remember where it is on astras, but it'll be somewhere in the main air duct, so it gets air passed over it to cool it. the centre bulbs will probably be a co-incedence

I have just had this same problem solved on my Astra. It is a weak design problem on them. I paid a local mechanic to fix mine. He replaced the fan unit and fitted a new seat belt stalk for £40. Fan works on all 4 speeds now.
To do the job I found a website called www.preloved.co.uk/go/motoring. There was instructions on how to do the job.
It is done from under the bonnet, a bit fiddly but well within the capabilities of a home mechanic.

It is likely to be the resistor.
If the last remaining section of the resistor fails, you'll only have speed 4 working - as the resistor is bypassed at full speed.
