Both can help you, and you can go to both at the same time, if you want. As for what will work best, it depends on your situation and what is causing the pain. A good chiropractor will x-ray your spine, then go over the x-rays with you to show you where and what the problem is. They will also explain exactly what they're going to do to help you. How long you have to go also depends on your situation. I first went to a chiropractor at someone's suggestion when my neck became so stiff and painful that I could barely turn my head from side to side. This went on for months. I felt 75% better after my very first chiro. visit. I went every week for a while, then every 2 weeks, and gradually decreased to once in a great while. Currently, I am back to every 2 weeks because I aggravate my condition with hours of computer work, and not enough exercise. A good chiropractor could have you feeling much, much better in minutes. See if you can find someone highly recommended by someone you know. Or make an appointment with a couple of them and just talk--see who you are most comfortable with. Like every profession, there are good and bad, but the fact is, a good one can make the pain go away. Without drugs. What could be better than that?

Why choose? Find a chiropractor that can do both. Many chiropractors combine massage therapy, physical therapy, nutrition/wellness, and rehab with chiropractic care.

I don't know what you mean by "butchers," but an adjustment might temporarily aggravate it. After a while and a series of adjustments and muscle work it should get better. Discuss it with a chiropractor and your primary care physician, but do realize that most physicians are wary of any treatment that doesn’t involve medication or surgery.

I've been under chiropratic care for my neck, lower back, and right foot since October. Overall I've had a very positive experience.

I suggest you see a chiropractor. There are many different causes of back pain and only a doctor can diagnose you after taking a history and doing physical exams. However, the most common cause of back pain is biomechanical and can be treated by a chiropractor. There are hundreds of diffferent techniques and not all chiropractors practice the same way. While the main treatment should include spinal adjusting, many chiropractors are also trained in physiotherapy and can treat you with passive therapies such as muscle stim, heat, cold laser therapy, or can give you active therapy such as stretching and exercise.

I suppose it depends on what is the cause of your problem? Do you actually have a positional fault, then I would go to a chiropractor or a physical therapist with a manual therapy certification. If its muscle related, I would definetely say PT. Bulging or herniated disc? Go to a PT with MDT experience. Either PT or chiro can aggrevate it if they don't follow some simple priniciples of the better/not better wose/not worse...meaning it is OK to have pain with a movement as long as you return to baseline or feel better afterwards. If you have pain with a movement that gets progressively worse, then you must stop.

The most common cause of musculoskeletal mid-back pain is poor posture...ie muscle related...but there are many medical causes of mid-back pain as well including gall bladder problems, esophageal ulcers etc...if you've had any "unusual" symptoms besides the pain (such as early satiety while eating, acid reflux, nausea/vomiting, etc) then I would follow up with a physician prior to seeing either a PT or a chiro.

As far as the PTs who just have you do the same exercises everytime you come in and "just sit behind a desk" as mentioned by the answer above, they are wasting people's money...stay away from places like these...Each session should teach you something new or help you progress in the exercises.

I work for a chiropractor and absolutley no scam . I am sorry to Scott who feels they are a scam. My chiropractor has had a lot of success. He only treats what he feels needs to be treated. So you don't keep coming back for more adjustments than you need. If you have a problem with your eyes you go to an eye doctor right? If you have heart problems you go to a cardiologist. If you have trouble with your skin you go to a dermatologist. So it is your back that is hurting right? Well, what better can you do than go to a doctor that specializes in the back? I would recommend checking the chiropractors credentials if you are worried. Palmer is the most renowned school for chiropractors so check to see if s/he went there and if so you are good to go. Good Luck

Chiropractic and physical therapy can both help. Depending on the injury a chiropractor will have you come in a couple of times a week for several weeks but the frequency of visits will taper off as you are feeling better. PT helped me too but they also had me coming in 3 times a week but after the first visit the PT's just sat behind the desk and watched me do the exercises. "you know what to do..." So I stopped going and just did the exercises at home. I still see a chiro every couple of weeks. More or less depending on how I feel.

If you have stretched muscles, why don't you take some MSM.
(Methylsulfonylmethane) It helps build the muscles back to up and lessons the pain, that is caused by injury. They will never be back to original but they will feel better, and no more aches or pains. Herbal and you can purchase them from the drugstore, or from a healthfood store near you.
Prairie Naturals - Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 2M8
Plus to relax the muscle you can get some 'SleepSense' (Melatonin) This will also help you relax at night and get some sleep. Give these a try before you go to the chiropractor.

Chriropracters have a nice scam going, they keep you coming back for treatments and you feel good only as long as you keep come back for readjustments. Chiropractors never really solve the problem and yes, they can sometimes aggravate an existing injury.
