Sarah,
You cannot normally use other people's work without their permission [there are exceptions, see 'fair use' in the wikipedia link below under 'sources'].

If you are looking for music to use in your slideshow, there are many places where you can get it 'royalty free' meaning you can use it as you wish.

If you don't want to pay for this royalty free music [legally, of course] try Jameno [source below]. Higher quality music for which you have to pay a small amount is available at magnatune.com.

If your project is not "fair use", then RIAA will prosecute for use of music that originates from their recordings. A solution is to use music and recordings that are in the public domain. This place speciallizes in the requirements of media producers. www.music4TVandFilms.com
