(People have gotten it wrong...)
It's a common noun when it does not take the place of a person's name and does not refer to a person.
Thus:
John's sister is Sally.
Mary told her sister that everything was O.K.
A sister is a female sibling.
All "common" nouns.
"Sister" only becomes a proper noun when it (a) refers to a particular person, AND (b) is used instead of the person's name. Thus:
"How are you doing today, Brother?" Sally asked. "Just fine, Sister," Mark replied. (Sister = functioning as a proper noun.)

Sister is a common noun if you are referring to your sibling. If however, you are referring to a Nun or a woman of cloth, e.g. Sister Mary, then it is a person's title and should be capitalized.
