gay establishments charge more than straight ones do? It used to be (like 30 years ago) that the only way that we could be assured of being around gay people only was to pay the inflated prices of these establishments---often owned by straights. Now, however, we have a choice. Is it just that people are willing to pay more to go to homosexual establishments so that they are more comfortable..I know this question kinda rambles..but basically I am asking..."Why do we still put up with paying more money for gay venues?"

Hmmm... I was wondering the same thing. I went with my best bud (a gay grrl) to the local gay bar and everything was waaayyyyy more expensive. The cover charge was double what I usually pay at a str8 club, the drinks were more than double for some stuff, and the club didn't look or sound any better. I asked her and she says it's because it's the only gay bar in the area, there is no choice.
I think it sucks.

Do a lot of straight places need to have 18 different flavors of fruit-infused vodka for the latest Cosmopolitan craze?

Do they spend hundreds of dollars on Halloween, Easter, St. Pat's, 4th of July, and Hump Day decorations?

Will we accept anything less fabulous?
(I know I will, if I go out it is to dives and more masculine places. But I live in the Castro, and I see what most places are like. Give me a beer and some bears and I am all set.)

I'm not saying that this should change, but reflecting on the way things seem to be at present.

p.s. Also, in SF it is primarily the straight clubs that have cover charges, except for special events. We would not put up with that at LGBT clubs.

It really does depend on where you are. I'm in the UK. and My Brother came over to see me. I know this Great place that has a straight bar above and a Gay bar below. I knew this place because I would go to the gay bar for drinks (the Straight bar couldn't make a drink to save themselves.{EX: Screw driver.... S: Cran vodka, and CRAN Apple juice. G: VODKA and OJ. PRF!}) so anyway. finding someplace like that in the states is hard. any way back to the story. We only had to pay once and that was to get in.

sometimes it is true that cover is more. the poster before me talking about the money owners put into events is a good point. i know two gay bar owners who have increased cover or drink prices b/c less and less gay men are going out. one of the two has an interesting theory. Gay people are meeting more online (especially the ones just looking for a hook up) and to a smaller extent at non-bar gay activities. so to keep solvent, he has to increase drink prices.

Can't say as I personally know what you're talking about. Where I live the "cover charges" are usually the same if not less than "straight" establishments.

It must have something to do with your region. In St Louis prices for a drink are reasonable unless you got ot he strip club where they are outrageous!

And jsut FYI the drinks at a gay club are much stronger if you ask me!

Depends where you travel.
As far as bars go, I don't drink much,
but it would be a cold day it the south before I would
pay a cover.

it is just like being in the "in" crowd right now.

Gays have just broken thru and are ready to go to great heights to prove themselves.

Like anything new and different, it will cost ya to come and see.

*I'm going to generalize*

Higher standards. Better quality. We understand quality of service and we usually expect it. (Atleast I do.) History shows that we have set most trends. That's how it is.

It is usually like that in Gay mecca tourist destinations.
But in my home town it varies...
