I have a 1985 Ford Ranger and the dashboard lights, emissions and brake, are always on. Does anyone know how to find out where the problem is for the two. How do I fix whatever is causing them to stay on. The brake light stays on even when the e-brake is off and i have no idea why the emissions light is on. Can any one help?

I have just recently passed emissions so I don't think that is the problem. i Think it may be a sensor that is transmitting a bad signal. Any ideas?

Contrary to popular belief do NOT automatically add brake fluid to any vehicle. If it is low there is a reason usually being the pads are quite worn. Remove the tires and have a look at the front pads and rear shoes I bet you will find one or the other needs replacing. For the emission light the older fords would come on at preset mileages to let you know to service the system. Check your mileage against the service guide and that might give you a clue. Also in the fords there is a vacuum switch that has a little filter in it. Ford calls this a control, if the filter gets plugged the light comes on and it sets a code.

You could be low on fluid, check that. You may need new brakes. The e brake switch may be stuck. You have an emission problem. That can be anyone of a few hundred things.

Does it have a computer? Get the reading done for about $50 and that will tell you exactly what to fix.

You might want to put brake fluid in first.
