The size of the tank is 36x18x15. I was thinking of keeping the rainbow cichlids with other none cichlids species.

Rainbow is a pretty small and mild tempered cichlid and should NOT be kept with many of those cichlids mentioned above, including: African Mouthbrooders, Convict , Festae , Green Terror , Jack Dempsey , Managuense Cichlid, Pike , Red Devil , Red Tilapia, and Texas.

In fact, it's best to keep them as the only cichlids in the tank, so that they don't have to spend their lives fighting over territory agains fish that will most likely be bigger and stronger then them.

Schooling fish that keep toward the mid and top of the water work well, like rainbow fish, hatchet fish, larger tetra's and rasbora's, silver dollars, etc. Bottom dwellers like loaches, catfish, and pleco's will work as well, but not too many.

Basically the tankmates need to be big enough not be taken for food (figure larger then an adult guppy) and should not be territorial (one type of territorial fish in a tank is plenty).

For exact species recommendations you would need to let us know the size of your tank.

Ghapy took the words right out of my mouth. Best to house them with more docile tank mates.
