I'm about 6 weeks and 4 days (by my count), and i have to go for my first ultrasound today to determine how far along i am. I was wondering, when i go for this appointment, would i look silly asking for them to just do the vaginal ultrasound instead of wasting time doing the topical ultrasound because i am a bigger girl and in my past experiences they have a hard time getting through the stomach lining and fatty tissue in there. Just want to know what you guys think? They might try both anyway right? Hey, i mean, you never know.

At 6 weeks, they'll to a transvaginal ultrasound. They wouldn't be able to see in through the external ultrasound just yet. My mother in law always told me (24 yrs as an OB nurse) that the rule of thumb for ultrasounds is to do vaginal until there is a bump. Best of luck.

well most of the time to get the gestational age of the fetus they usually do a vaginal ultrasound because sometime the fetus is to small to show in a ultrasound screen.

experince ultrasound at 6 weeks to determine the babys gestational age.

I am a big girl also...They still try and look with a traditional u/s...and yes their time was wasted in my early pregnancy. I had to have a vaginal one done...but they can only do that up to a certain point in the pregnancy...but by then the baby is big enough to be detected. Let them do their job...you can mention it to save time..

It has nothing to do with your size. A transvaginal u/s is the ONLY way to see a baby at this stage. They can only do one on the belly around 12-14 weeks.. I know because I had an u/s at 12 weeks and they did it both ways.

first of all they will do the vaginal because your not far enough to do the other and thats doesnt even make since pregnant women are huge and they get the regular ultrasounds.

this early i think they have to do a vaginal to see the fetus. when i was 6 weeks thats what they did to me. but it wouldn't hurt asking, i mean you will be saving their time and yours if you already know it won't work. good luck

I am also not a tiny young thing. Both of my u/s's to date have been internal. At that young age, an internal will give you a much much more accurate measurement.

Good luck!!

just let the radiologist do their job, theres a reason why they make you drink all that water, if they can't get a clear picture then theyll do it vaginally. Well thats what they did with me.
