We do not know whether aliens exist--they have not revealed themselves to any sufficiently reputable source.

We have now discovered over 200 planetary systems beyond our own--more than 200 "exoplanets." Chances are pretty good life exists elsewhere in our galaxy.

How likely is it there is intelligent life? That seems much less likely. Life existed on earth more than two billion years before multicellular organisms evolved. Using that as a very rough guide (sample size 1), we might expect only 1 out of 6 planets that harbor life to have multicellular organisms.

For the 650 million years multicellular organisms existed on our planet, intelligence sufficient to make and use fire has only been around at most 2 million years. Or we could compare species--of the 100 million to 400 million species that ever existed, only two or three (all closely related to us) could use fire.

It is highly doubtful extraterrestrials travelled across the vast gulfs of interstellar space only to hide in our closets and use us for purposes of sexual gratification or to perform dubious medical experiments upon us.

So far we've seen no verifiable evidence of other sentient species. That said, I believe with some certainty that somewhere in our galaxy at some past, present, or future time, a sentient species did/does/will exist.

Why haven't we heard from them?

Perhaps they are not technologically advanced enough to be heard. They may be mastering stone knives right now, or experiencing their own Rennaisance.

Perhaps they are here right now. Any species sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar distances would be able to hide or masquerade with ease. That Boeing 737 that just flew by may be a surveillance craft.

Perhaps they are so far away they will never notice us and vice versa.

Perhaps they existed a million years ago and died out.

Perhaps they will exist a million years from now.

It is really impossible to know for sure.

The Drake Equation suggests that there is sentient life out there. The Fermi Paradox casts doubt. Play around with the calculation form at the second link and see what you think.

You must distinguish between Life, and Intelligent life as we know it. Does Bacteria or fungus exist? I would bet yes. Does Intelligent life exist? More Advanced than Humans, I would say no, or we would have found each other by now, at least heard an electronic pulse of some sort. I know this is an unpopular answer--- it goes against human impulse to beleive we are not alone.... but think about the chances of intelligent life forming-- everything had to be close to perfect- distance from the sun, climate, atmospherical conditions, survive formation, etc... Multiply this close to impossible chance by the number of chances and we get 1, us...

In other words 1/Infinite (Chance) * Infinite (Universe) = 1 (Earth)

Life exists out there and by the age of the whole universe i can bet my boots that there are far more advanced life forms than our own out there. i come to this conclusion on the basis that we aren't even very intelligent we cant even land on mars yet.. the much smarter life forms out there wouldn't want to contact us and screw our heads up by trying to teach us how to travel at the speed of light or even faster we will figure this out in time besides if we had there technology the way the earth is run we would be at war with everyone and blowing each other up.

just look back in our short life time computers the size of rooms which now days have less power than the typical hand held calculator. What does the future hold? allot to put it in a nutshell

Life elsewhere is almost certain to exist, statistically. So many stars and solar systems in which life is possible! I think more people are accepting this possibility each year. I tend to the belief life if possible and even probable.

The body of evidence around sightings is interesting but perhaps not convincing. What is it that people are seeing? Unless you personally witness something, one cannot tell.
I did witness something as a boy out camping. Lights high in the sky were moving in a fashion I could not make sense of. Was it a UFO? Was it aircraft maneuvers by the military at a high altitude? I believe I saw something but I cannot confirm what it is that I saw.

yes, yes, yes, yes. Drakes formula. 400 billion stars in each galaxy, hundreds of billions of galaxies exist. our milky way galaxy holds about 350 billion stars, our sun is just one star. So think of the odds. 400 billion X 400 billion galaxies = 160,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 is a minimum estimate of how many stars exist in our universe. Do you think 1 out of all those stars supports life. Seriously have common sense. I also hate these people who say, No, I doubt their is life out their, but I believe their is spirits. How stupid, who in their right mind can scientifically even base common sense onto spirits. Science says life exists on our planet. Nothing proves spirits exist. I would rather go with life than spirits. Man why are people so dumb.

Sure. There's probably a LOT of other planets with life on them throughout the universe.

Hi. Life on Earth has such diversity that it would be hard to believe that life could not exist on any other planet. Intelligence, on the other hand, is exceedingly rare. Just my opinion.

Possibly. Some aliens from far far away is asking the same question on the aliens yahoo answers "Do aliens exist?" ;)
