They have the worst owner in the NFL. He thinks you can build a championship team through free agency. Daniel Snyder makes Al Davis look like he still knows what he's doing.

As we've all figured out by now, Dan Snyder is a huge part of the problem. He can't get it through his thick skull that having the best of something on paper is far from having the best. He assembled the most expensive coaching staff in history, and it was a classic case of too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen. He has no patience to develop talent, and tries to aim for the Super Bowl every year. That's why he's never come close.
But even before Snyder, the Redskins have been horrible at talent evaluation at most positions for a long time. They seem to get the most out of linebackers with some consistency, and the O-lines have been pretty good, but other than that, it's been sad. Most of the top-ten draft picks I can remember have been disappointments: Michael Westbrook, Heath Shuler, Patrick Ramsey, Carlos Rogers... then there's Sean Taylor, who's immensely talented but an idiot. Beyond his off-field issues, he cost us a few touchdowns trying to do too much. The only non-disappointments are Champ Bailey, who's gone to Denver where he's competing for Defensive Player of the Year awards, and Chris Samuels. I shudder to think about what they'll do with pick 6 this year.
If we'd taken the money spent on one bust - Brandon Lloyd, Adam Archuleta, TJ Duckett, you name it - and used it towards a solid scouting staff, we'd be in much better shape.

Two words: Dan Snyder. He overpays mediocre to average players, he overpays his coaches, and he brings in guys who although may be talented, just aren't going to mesh together in the ultimate team sport. He gets similar players at the same position, not different ones, creating controversy. Brandon Lloyd, Santana Moss and Antwan Randle El are pretty much the same type of receiver. Randle El was a $6 million punt returner last year, Moss was inconsistent and Lloyd was a bust. They gave millions to LaVar Arrington to only cut him, they gave millions to Adam Archuleta to make him the most expensive punt coverage player in NFL history. I wonder what made Joe Gibbs want to return. Who would want to coach for a guy who works so hard against your success? They've been less agressive in free agency this year, but other that signing Fletcher-Baker, not much of substance has been done. Smoot wasnt setting the world on fire the first time around. I'm not convinced this time will be different. Guys like Dan Snyder and Al Davis makes me wish that the NFL could fire OWNERS.

Their management has exactly the wrong strategy for success in today's NFL. They trade away draft picks in order to sign B+ grade players to big free-agency deals, while all the successful teams build their teams through smart drafting and they keep and develop the players they draft. Look at the Chargers, Colts, Patriots, etc, etc, etc. Their key players were nearly all acquired through the draft. You can't sign Antwaan Randle El to a big deal and expect him to do... ANYTHING WHATSOEVER.

It's because they make bad player personnel decisions. For the last 5 years their drafts have stunk. Their free agent moves haven't been good either. They really need a General Manager who can make good decisions. The system they have now stinks.

Are you planning on asking this same question about 31 of the 32 teams in the NFL? You already asked it about the Niners.
