What is a lesbian?

Clarification: This is not "Anti-Gay" this is considered upper academic level Queer and Gender Theory, and is considered by some to be newest wave of feminism.

"What is a lesbian?"

An abstract concept with a large basis within the binary sex (male/female) and binary gender models (man/woman) from a technical perspective, lesbian, as a homosexual, would depend on the existence of humans with the exact same sex (genitals). Lesbian is also a cultural concept that one can claim as an identity.

There is no absolute, universal definition of the word because it is a concept based on contemporary gender mores and body models that largely ignore the fact that it is more biologically accurate to say "there are as many [human] sexes as there are people." Lesbian itself is not a concrete biological reality, it is a social construct based on how people perceive themselves socially.

Some could say, "A lesbian is a woman who has sex with other women" Some would insert the word "exclusively" before "sex with women" and others would leave it out. Neither is right or wrong regardless of what legal documents or definitions would say as those are also opinions.

Some could say, "A lesbian is a female who has sex with other females" and others would say that female identified males who identify as lesbians can be lesbians. (if they still agreed with a two sex models where anatomies are carbon copy measurements of sizes, chromosome patters, hormone levels, etc instead of socially acceptable generalizations).

Some could say, "A person who identifies as a lesbian and also identifies as a trans person (transsexual, transgender, other etc. transwoman, transman, other, etc) is a lesbian."

And still some could say, "A person labeled 'intersex' by doctors could define themselves as a lesbian."

In this way we can define lesbianism as a social construct as it is subjective and wholey reliant on differing opinions.

That said, people could classify lesbian as an identity and/or (a) culture(s) along with many other things.
Or summed up, "a lesbian is an opinion".
