I think you'll have to do the comparisons yourself. Two good free sources online for info are Encyclopedia.com and Wikipedia.org.
All these countries started their individual rises towards totalitarianism around the early 1900s and were profoundly affected by World War II; World War II brought about the fall of all of these totalit. regimes, with the exception of the Soviet Union.
I'd start by coming up with my own categories by making a list down the page of, for example, Description of Country (agricultural, etc.), Form of Government, Economy (and, if you really want to work toward an A+, such categories as Science & Technology, and Education & Health), and Significant Events & Leaders that eventually led to totalit. during the periods of (across the top of the page) the Early 1900s, During and After World Wars I and II, and, for the Soviet Union, until the fall of communism.
Then comes the hard work: Check out the online encyclopedias (I prefer Wikipedia) and fill in all the blocks on your category sheet by researching each country one at a time. And trekking to the library really isn't so bad .......
A tremendous amount of action took place in these countries starting in the 19-teens, and gained speed in the 20s, 30s and 40s. The regimes of Italy, Germany, and Japan, of course, all fell with the end of World War II in 1945; communism in the Soviet Union lasted longer. The biggest comparison you could make is lumping together Germany (the Nazis), Italy (the Fascists), and Japan (you'll have to look that up) as working toward one type (or at least a very similar type) of totalit. and being on one side of World War II (the losing side), and separating the Soviet Union (the Communists) from the pack as embracing a different form of totalit (Communism) and being on the winning side (our side) of World War II.
I would make sure to make a point in the finished paper to compare each country's leaders (Hitler, Mussolini, et al) and their progress on the road to totalit. in their individual countries during the same time frame. Also any differences you unearth during your research on how individual leaders went about accomplishing their objectives or even any differences in what they saw as their objectives would be good. And throwing in a comparison of the quality of life for the people of each country before-totalit. and after-totalit. should be easy: before was not-so-great; after was much better (and that's where the Economy and Education & Health categories in your first step come in).
This should get you into Harvard - good luck!
