I was in a similar position & I would say have 2 maids of honor or if one is married have one as the maid of honor and the other as the matron of honor (also works if one is several years older than the other). This way you can have both marked as important women in your life and it's your wedding and you can make your wedding party consists of whomever you want... it's your day.

I think that brides tend to forget how much work it is to be a maid of honour and the kinds of costs that they endure (for the parties and food, trips to bridal shop etc.) also your maid of honour will be the one there helping you with most of your decisions and making your party favours, almost anything you do yourself, it's your maid of honour duty to be there to help.
In light of all that, you should pick the person who will be able to handle it all and can be committed to you and your wedding. The other can be the/a bridesmaid.

You can have more then one Maid of Honor. I'm getting married next year, and I'm having my best friend as my Matron of Honor and my Cousin as my Maid of Honor. Hope this helps.

It's up to you, of course but...would picking your best friend alleviate the tension between choosing one family member over another family member? If you're "that close" to the cousin, explaining it to her should make her feel better for not being chosen and just don't tell it to your sisters. Let them know that you love them and want the best friend to stand by you on that day because you know they'll stand by you the rest of your lives. : )

that is a tough desicion. you may want your best friend because you guys have so much fun together. but then again, i might actually prefer my cousin because we are related (and it sounds like you guys are really good friends), but also your best friend now may not continue to be your best friend forever. not saying it will no matter what happen, but, that stuff happens. i think I'd have them both as my maids of honor! thats okay to have(2). Congratulations!

You don't have to follow the traditional rules. you can have two maids of honor. Is one married? If so, you can have a matron of honor (the married one) and a maid of honor (the single one). Do whatever you want! It's your day! They should both be happy if you decide to make them both your maids of honor.

I think that you need to sit both of them down and discuss it with them. I am sure they will understand your predicament. Communication is always the best option. They will understand your situation and your choice once you make it. No matter who it is. I have always just wanted to go with family in the wedding because that way no friends get hurt but that is just my opinion.

Would your cousin be as good a friend if you weren't related?
Your family is picked for you.
You pick your own friends
