It's really easy...

PLAYDO RECIPE
1 cup salt

2 cups plain flour

2 cups water

2 tablespoons cooking oil

4 teaspoons of cream of tartar

Place all ingredients in a pan and heat gently until it forms a lump
and leaves the sides of the pan

Allow to cool thoroughly

Store in an airtight container

Kool-Aid® Play Dough

1 cup flour
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid
1/4 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup water

Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar and Kool-Aid® in a medium pot. Add water and oil. Stir over medium heat 3 to 5 minutes. When mixture forms a ball in pot, remove. Knead until smooth. Put in a plastic bag and refrigerate.

It may be cheaper to buy but it's not nearly as much fun and you can use food coloring and color the playdo just about any color you can think by mixing two colors together. You can also dye very small amounts for different projects. Most of what you buy comes in about 4 colors.

This site has another recipe. I think it is similar to the one already posted, but it tells you how to make custom colors and it has a whole bunch of images to show you how to do it.
