I am 30 weeks pregnant with my first child. My ankles are EXTREMELY swollen. I know they say that some swollen extremities are normal, but I have also heard about pressing on the swollen area and if it leaves an indentition, then you should see your doctor. I have mentioned the swolleness last month when I went to my Dr. but she didn't seem too concerned... Ive heard this can result in preeclampsia. Anyone else experience this? Would I "look" stupid, going to the Dr.?

I had HORRIBLE swelling from about six months on. Definitely mention it to your doctor again, just to be safe. But after ruling out other problems (like the pre-eclampsia) mine just told me, "Some people are swellers and you are one of the lucky ones!" Nothing I did helped - by the end I couldn't put on any of my shoes without pain. It lasted until a week or so after I delivered too. Then one morning I woke up and I had ankles again - it was that sudden. Good luck!

swelling is totally normal. i had a baby 7 months ago and i was like the pilbury dough boy... lol... well my ankels and feet anyway. its mainly due to excess fluid in your body from the baby and the amniotic fluid. try elevating your feet every so often during the day and dont walk around too much. the indents are probably just dimples in your skin from it being stretched by the swelling. you can go to the doctors if you want. i mean if your doctor didnt seem pretty concerned with it before then its just nothing, but you can always go back and tell them that its bothering you and they will take a second look. good luck and if you need anymore advice feel free to email me!

No you wouldn't look stupid. I had the exact same thing with my first (and only so far) child. And people at work were starting to really freak me out by telling me that it was dangerous. But I called the doctor and she really said just keep my feet up, make sure that I am drinking plenty of water, and try to avoid salt as much as possible. I imagine that when you are going to your prenatal appointments, your doctor is constantly checking your blood pressure and getting urine samples to look for traces of protein, which are both signs of toxemia. He or she would let you know if it was a health risk for you or your little one. Congratulations on your baby...you're almost there! :)

Its called pitting edema. It can be a sign of preeclampsia. If you have an appointment coming up, bring it up if the doctor doesn't notice it on their own. Try to stay off your feet and lie down as much as possible. Best of luck to you.

Yes, it's a sign of preeclampsia.. but swelling is actually just a side effect of the pre-eclampsia. The real dangerous sign is high blood pressure. I'm sure they check your bp every time you come in and if it's normal, don't worry... you can't have pre-eclampsia w/o high blood pressure.
