I have Mirena, and I love it. I was very uncomfortable for a few days after insertion and had cramps, but that has all gone away. I haven't had a period since August, either. I had very few options available to me, and my doc highly recommended it. I am so glad she did. Check out the website. It is very informative.

Mirena coils are generally considered an advance on the older simple copper coils. They release a minute amount of progesterone each day.

Unlike standard coil which increase bleeding and cramps, Mirena tends to reduce them. A significant number of women loose their periods altogether.

As with all coils there is a slight increase in pelvic infection risk. Theoretically women could get progesterone side effects, this is however quite uncommon as the daily dose is so low.

As with all coils I generally recommend that they do not grin and bear it, but have it removed early if there are problems.

If you don't fancy this, or try it and it doesn't suit, there is still the mini pill, which I will prescribe in a non smoker, until aged 45 years, or that old standby vasectomy!

Had one fitted in January - bad cramping immediately afterwards for about three hours, then two days of on and off lessening cramps, nothing since. Marvellous thing.

I had never had children or been pregnant so insertion was a little uncomfortable for an instant but otherwise it's been fine. No side effects.

I had it fitted to tackle out of control bleeding and it stopped it within 2 days.

I have the Mirena.........I will be 40 soon. I love it. The only thing I have a complaint about was the spotting that you have off and on the first few months. It isn't bad but enough to become annoying after awhile. I no longer have heavy painful periods I had before getting it.

Dont want to put you off but I had one fitted as a last resort and it didnt help. I went to have it removed and the nurse couldnt find it so I had to go down to theartre and have it taken out. I insisted on a hysterectomy in the end because I had tried everything and nothing worked for me. Good luck. What us women have to go through ladies.

I had it fitted 2 weeks ago. I had bad cramps for a few hours afterwards and every so often in the first few days but now all is fine (touch wood)

I had a bad experience but in my case its apparently hereditory as my mum was the same with it. i had a lot of irregular heavy periods when of course you aren't meant to have any. no other real side affects tho.

I was going to have one fitted but the nurse at the clinic told me such horrors and that it hurts when they take it out to replace it. I think its every 3-5yrs? (don't quote me on that one). so I had the op done and I've been happy since I've had it done.! at least they don't have to keep prodding about up there every 3-5yrs!

if you speak to your local GUM clinic they will give you all the pros and cons from a neutral perspective, many people can have problems but that doesnt mean you will, listening to negative experiences will make you feel scared and perhaps decide against it when your not in possesion of all the facts.. please speak to a proffesional about this as you say you dont have many options left.....
