I would say honesty would be at the top of the list. Along with trust, although that can't come about without time and experience. Mutual interests. Mutual values/morals. If a "friend" can point out something you've done or said that was hurtful, without feeling afraid of your reaction, because they genuinely care, and want to bring out the "best" of you. Yep, that's what makes a friend to me, someone who makes me feel good about myself.

Open Communication is # 1: being able to talk honestly and safely about your feelings and/or or pastimes without fear of harsh judgment or fear that the other will withhold honest information. This includes being a good listener, giving honest feedback, giving advice when asked for, giving support, encouragement, and empathizing (relating emotionally to the other person).
You should also spend time together or communicate fairly frequently or at least on some regular mutually agreed upon basis.
You should be willing to lend things to your friend and receive when given to. This includes being available when your help is needed or making the time even when it is inconvenient.
Small gestures allow each person to feel good will towards each other. This includes acknowledging each other's birthdays and other special moments with cards or gifts, occasional suprises (trips and trinkets), special letters or emails, compliments, food/dinner, and other thoughtful things that would mean something to the person and be a friendly gesture.
There are other things, as well, like loyalty, common interests, and a similar sense of humor...but the most important ingredient for friendship is TRUST. If you don't trust that you can count on the person, you don't have a strong friendship. You need to know that the person has your best interests in mind ("has your back" so to speak). If you don't think the person cares enough or they don't, you don't have trust.

the most importan is honesty then there is trust and respect there also has to be kindness and compassion . a forgiving nature also helps and some common interest and shared values also are important being able to give as well as reccieve are also important not being selfish and allowing the other person room to grow giving eachother the room that is needed to grow and evolve . being a good listener always having a box of kleenexes around ( the good kind that does not hurt your nose ) and always having choclate fudge riiple ice cream in the freezer . these are the things that I belive are important to making a friendship work .

Patience, tolerance, acceptence, understanding, some degree of love and caring and a willingness to go the extra mile.
If you are in college you should know these things.

1) honesty - I don't need friends to lie to me even to save my feelings, sometimes you have to say the truth and hurt someone to help them in life
2) love - If you do not love your friend then this is someone that you just know, not a true friend
3) depedability - if i'm in need and you can help me, come through

trust, loyalty and respect. You shouldn't ask this question if you have friends. Just see what you did to be a good friend. Listening to them, supporting them, never betraying them.
