don't you just hit them together when there's a note. there really isn't much music reading capabilities involved here.

i believe when you try out for the drumline they have you audtion on all the drums. for symbols there aren't "notes" to read, i mean there isn't pitches or anything to worry about. but there are what look like "x's" that you have to follow. you need to be able to count the music, which is almost like reading it.
by the time you get to college the drummers have been playing for years. so i suggest you attempt to learn to read music, at least the basic stuff. you might have to audition before they let you march

umm.. you would probably have to be able to play all percussion instraments to be in a college level marching band...but if not then as long as you can read notes(like half notes, quarter notes) and read rests(Whole rests, Quarter rests ect.) then you should be good...hope this helps....

not really, but kinda of.... you need to know how to follow the music to know when to hit the symbols. It shouldn't really be hard to learn though
