YOU SAID: set the JUMPER on the back the same as the one you took out. Make sure you look at the jumper chart on the new drive and select the proper jumper config.
* So i just take the DVD ROM out and attached the wires in the same way to the CD WRITER!
So where would i find and how do i config it?
thanks so much!

Sure you can! Just take the DVD drive out and replace it with any flavor you like! DVD writer, DVD reader CD writer, etc. Just find one you like (make sure it reads and writes all file types and blanks) and set the jumper on the back the same as the one you took out. Make sure you look at the jumper chart on the new drive and select the proper jumper config.
When you remove your drive, look on it for a jumper chart. It is probably set to master or cable select. Look at the new drive jumper chart and set it to the same as the original. The jumper is on the same end as the ide connector.

I think I know what your problem is? You stated it your self:
"I have a compaq pc with a DVD rom only."
Your CD player head might be out of alignment. Actually you can add another DVD/CD Writer/Player to you computer with no problem. I think what you are seeing is a IDE cable that has one IDE Plug on it. To make it an internal DVD/CD Player/Burner add to it, you would have to purchase a two plug IDE cable (about $10.00 at a computer store). Replace the single with the duo plug, plug that into the IDE Controller socket. Before you do anything with CD Player and DVD/CD Player/Burner. You are going to have to make your CD Player the Slave (this is done through the use of a little block that is electrical), for that you should see on the back or a diagram on the drive showing you which postion the block has to be in. Now on the new DVD/CD Player/Burner, you would make this your master (follow the instruction that come with the DVD/CD Writer/Player on how to do this). Then plug the cable into each of the Drives, connect to the other end back into the Controller. There you have it, no external drives or anything. The new internal DVD/CD Writer/Player drive should cost between $25.00 on up, maybe even less.
You might want to check and make sure that your audio cable is plugged into your sound card. You will have to hook up the audio on the new drive as well. Is your operating system reporting that there is an error as far as sound goes? Is your operating System give you an error message about even being able to read the disk?
DVD drives whether they are homr DVD drives or in a computer. It was a requirement that DVD devices be backward compatible to CD's. I imagine that the Blu-disc or HD DVD, whatever one wins will be backward compatible to DVD's and CD's as well. If only to keep people from replacing their whole music and movies libraries.

no remember if it extremely is a DVD WRITING stress, it additionally should do CD WRITING. And there are a number of older DVD study and CD study/write drives. for short term you may purchase an exterior DVD and CD writing stress for around £30. the fee of a sparkling inner is often very intense as you're finding out to purchase convenience.

A DVD rom should be able to read CDs... so the DVD Rom maybe bad. You should get a new DVD Burner. If you have handy friends that can put in for you(take out the bad DVD Rom) buy on online(about $30.00) otherwise take it to local computer store and have they put a new one for you(should be less than $60.00). Good Luck

Old drives could not burn a CD or DVD and could not read a CD-R or DVD-R. The same is true of old standalone DVD players.

You can get DVD-Writers that can read and write CDs and DVDs. They only cost about $40 or more. Check out http://www.tigerdirect.com for some prices and options. Great site for buying hardware and software, usually at cheap prices.

well with a DVD-Rom it should let you burn cds, let alone read them. If you cannot find a way to fix this, I would suggest buying a dvd-rw drive and have it installed. You can find them cheap on E-BAY..

You can buy a combo device these days reletively inexpensively. A CDRW and a DVDRW device. Should be available on sale for about $50.
So you only have one drive, which can do all your CD and DVD functions
Hope this helps

External is the way to go for you. Either buy a prebuilt external CD\DVD burner or make one.
