For some it's the family, for many it's religion, and for others it ranges everywhere from money to just life itself. What is the main motivational factor in your life? What keeps you going everyday, and/or makes life worth living? Why?

Serious and mature answers are greatly desired. Thanks!

I think that the only thing that can motivate you in everything you do is the desire to improve yourself. Whether that means you want to improve your finances, your education, your appearance or something else, it really doesn't matter.

People say they are motivated by a whole bunch of things, but I think that behind the manifestations of our motives a deeper and more basic mechanism is at play. Human beings first focus on satisfying their primary needs, like food or shelter, and when they've got that covered they focus on improvement of some higher goals like friendship or professional success.

What makes life worth living? Life! Do you have any idea what a miracle life really is? I'm not a religious person myself but scientifically speaking, there are a lot of mechanisms that are involved in creating a human life and maintaining it through childhood and adulthood, fighting infections, genetic mutations and a variety of environmental hazards. We should all simply be lucky we're alive!

Life is what you make of it, and you should make something of it, because it would be a shame not to. Even when things don't look so good we have to believe that we can make them better and just try to achieve our goals. Believe in yourself and there is nothing you can't do.

I like this question. Religion is surely not my motivation; I'm not religious by any stretch of the imagination. Money? Nah. I'm not materialistic either. At this time, I suppose my greatest motivational factor in life is relationships with others. My family and friends. The next motivational factor would be doing good in school thus getting into college and getting a job I enjoy (not necessarily one that makes a lot of money). But personally I'm not too fond of that second motivation--it's basically what's expected of me. Happiness is basically my goal/motivation in life.

personal acceptance.

#1 motivational factor.

for myself it is now and has been for the past 20 years an ongoing realization to be less dependent of social custom and social behaviour (and therefore relationships which disregard my own if unspoke personal values/purposes) for personal happiness. and i have come a long way. and i realize that there is no absolute either way for even if i disconnected entirely from the social fabric of society i would yet need and seek to have relationship with the natural world in some sustainable and joyful manner.

the aforesaid being a life-choice made in a time of my life when i realized that i had spent the first 25+ years of my life seeking social acceptance and neglecting some my personal values and personal destiny. and ever having/doing/being the internally awakening creating person in relationship tensions of .....' what to leave in ... what to leave out' of discussion / sharing.

so yes....i have learned and realized time and again that there is ever the tension of both personal to social evaluations created in mind/feeling/body to personal and social relationship and that this balance is created by what brings joy to self and others.

all of that being said....in the recreation of relationships is there ever the nagging realization that evaluations determined choices by self and others creates real tension for acceptance and tolerance of myself and others....

i have got stronger to stand up for myself and what i believe ...value.

but it takes a lot of time to be able to articulate what is valueable / meaningfull of self within or without relationship and it is not all ways easy given the minds of others in relationship which be sometime unprepared for reception or their own sharing of self.

and then there are the realizations.......

crisis....?.............what crisis........?

be well

I put effort into things that bring me happiness: basketball, piano, writing, friends, girls, alcohol. Haha. But yeah. I always ask myself - If I do this, will it be the best for my happiness (without hurting someone)? Even better if that good feeling can be shared. I guess that's the motivation behind all my actions.

I wish I knew. I was diagnosed with terminal cancer ten years ago, and am still kicking.... not sure what keeps me going. Maybe just the "sticking it to the doctors" aspect of the whole thing, like: " Just who do you think you are telling me I have six months to live??!?" So, I'm probably still living out of spite.

For me its my friends.

They make me laugh and if there were no such things as friends I think the world would be lonely.

Friends can help you go through things. Friends can make the difference from killing yourself and living. Friends are there to make you happy but yet having friends you have to suffer the consequences like rumors, some jackass talking behind your back.

I guess that's why they say choose your friends wisely.

I live for love, and for me that includes my husband, my kids, my family and friends. I live to make the people I love happy, that makes ME happy. I'm a people pleaser but feel in my life I'm getting back just as much as I give so I'm content with myself and my life.

Competition.
If the competition's too fierce at something, I don't bother competing. Otherwise, I want to be better than person X, who is most likely a person in my life who has caused me some form of strife.

Perhaps that's not healthy.

My greatest motivation is to educate my fellow citizens to become equal or better than myself.

That is not as altruistic as it seems. If more
people were knowledgable we would have a better world.
