What's uncool is to live with a regret that you didn't do something which might have led to something great. If you feel a wave is too enthusiastic, try to head-nod or, better yet, the wink... ;)
Carpe diem (or seize the carp)!

Wave or don't wave. If this is the biggest worry in your life, then you don't have much to worry about.
If he took your wave as silly, and he decides to think ill of you, another crush will come along, and you'll have a chance to try another approach. Or maybe you just don't know it, but the guy's a jerk. Or maybe it was a friendly bit of irony. Or maybe....
Cool or uncool, this set of values is values with training wheels. Don't let it matter so much. You'll have real values to cope with later in life.

Nothing wrong with it. Things can happen when you put yourself out there. Next time you see him, wave to him again, if he waves back and smiles, then he may like you, which then you should say hi to him or try to talk to him

It is absolutely NOT uncool! Maybe you just caught him by surprise. I would try again the next time you see him and see how he reacts.

Maybe he just didn't expect you to wave. Try smiling and saying hi next time.

No, it's not uncool. It just seems fan-girlish. He may appreciate it, or think you are embarassing.
