I got a breast pump from someone, she was giving it away. I don't personally know her so she's not my friend or anything. Some say it should be fine to use it, just to clean it really well, but others say it would be gross to use someone else's breast pump... any thought on this? Would I be gross for using it? If not, what are some good ways to clean it to make sure it's sterilized well?

If it's an electric breast pump, I would recommend contacting the manufacturer and getting a new tubing/ parts set. I loaned my pump to a friend, but bought her a new set of tubing that came sealed in the original packaging to avoid any problems.

If it's a manual pump, I don't know if I would use it without some serious sterilization. You could call the local lactation consultant and ask about ways to sterilize it or, again, contact the manufacturer for tips.

As long as all the parts are clean and sterile it should be fine. Breast pumps are really expensive. The cheapest one I've ever found was a manual and cost a little over $40 but most are a lot more than that. Save yourself some money and use the one she gave you.

8 years ago I bought a Medela Breast Pump and it was almost $300. It came with the same parts that I brought home from the hospital, so the ones that came with the pump stayed sealed. I sold the pump after I used it for nursing my twins and my daughter for half of what I paid for it. The pump itself provided the suction; no milk ever entered the pump. As long as you can buy new tubing and parts or sterilize them very well, I think it will be fine.

Breast pumps are extremely expensive- and actually most hospitals rent them out. If it were gross and or unsanitary, hospitals, of all establishments, wouldn't do it! Try calling a local hospital's lactation department/specialist and ask what they think the best way to serilize it is. Honestly, the only thing you really need to be concerned with is the cup that fits your breast and the bottles.

Otherwise, get ready to pay $400-500 for a good breast pump!

i dont get why people find this so gross, as long as its cleaned and steralized theres nothing wrong with it. Im sure this lady wasnt disease infected or she probably couldnt afford to buy a breast pump. Its not gross its shopping wise. Clean it and use it

Once you have a child you realize 2nd hand is the way to go.
cleaning: Either boil all parts that come into contact with your breast and the milk or you can put it thru the dishwasher too on the sani cycle. I got mine used from a 2nd hand baby store. My son is now 2 and fine.

You just need to sterilize all the parts that are detachable...i think its fine to do this....they are EXPENSIVE!
