How do they measure the success of an advertisement?

I am just curious, thank you for your answer

They use the Neilsen (sp?) ratings. Neilsen families viewing habits are tracked and averages are taken to determine how a show is doing and what stations are doing well.

They can track the number of clicks on your remote and find the channel that you watch by tracking the remote. Every remote that they sell in market comes with a embedded chip thats used to track your viewing habits.
