Firstly in response to tamsyn, there is an ASBO generation, but putting it into context we are referring to the minority of the people causing the majority of the problems, that just society.

But within the context we speak of, ive been a cop for three years, and i think yes were are fighting a losing battle.

The government and police have managed to stay on top because in everybodies head there is a little voice saying, you should listen to them or there will be consequences.

But this generation dont care, they dont have that voice, both nature and nurture has brought this out in them.

Our society has failed them and instilled practically no sense of discipline or civic responsibility.

Kids shout and hit their parents, but the parents cant smack their children to discipline them.
Pupils talk back to teachers, and teachers cant shout back else they face discipline action.
Then in work, they dont work as they can get more out of staying at home and getting pregnant and living off welfare.
Then they go out and smoke and drink and commit crime and the courts give them the soft option as there is not enough prison space, and then they Get ASBO's and ABC's and they dont care!!!
They breach them left right and centre and are not being held responsible for their actions.

im not bitter i swear

I think the whole government policy on family life has caused the problems we are seeing today..children need stability, rules, boundaries and role models to grow into well adjusted adults and unfortunately this is not happening.ASBO's have become a status symbol among the groups of unruly youngsters who earn them, they know its not an affective punishment and continue on there path of destructive behaviour .They need to be punished in line with the severity of the offence they commit and see the consequences of there actions. They need to be taught about respect and that is something that is severely lacking in some of today's youth. With PC attitudes and interference in schools they don't have the discipline they need to be good members of the community, they get away with what they like because no one is aloud to punish them.
Not all young people are like this but it is very hard to protect the good from the bad.Unfortunately everyone always blames everyone else with these issues , but the real issue is that parents have to teach there children right from wrong and take full responsibility for them instead of pandering to them.
One thing I remember from my childhood is that if I did anything wrong I would be in trouble with my parents and that was enough to keep me fairly well behaved!

I belive they are, ASBOs don't mean a bloody thing to most of those that have them and the same goes for the tags, they seem to be just a badge of honour now, respect for the law doesen't seem to have any meaning, offenders carry on breaking it whether they have asbos, tag, or have spent time in prison.

There is not an 'ASBO' generation. What you are referring to is a minority of the general population of teenagers and young people who tarnish the reputation of the rest. There have been similar populations of those who rebel in every generation, however you choose to look at it. As a teenager myself, i find it annoying when the whole of my generation is given a bad name because of a mere few. Who knows, in a few years others may be condemning the older generation for the war in iraq, for global warming and for other probelms.

The police might have a chance if this diabolical government would let them do their jobs.

i didnt know they were fighting, perhaps they are trying to drown the kids with paperwork?

it is ridiculous to attempt to control the behaviour of rebellious teenagers by issuing them with (what some of them see as) merit badges.
