they are given a death date. The day ends at midnight. By waiting until midnight that gives the maximum amout of time for an appeal or pardon to come through.

I think I read somewhere that death warrants are only good for once specific day. If they schedule the execution at 12:01 am, then the state has time to deal with all of the last minute appeals for stays of execution, etc. without having to get more warrants.

Because it is the first opportunity for execution specified on that date. When people witnessed executions outdoors, they were held at dawn for the same reason. A specific time is needed because of possible clemancy. Neither time is convenient for accessing appeals judges, clemancy boards, or the governor.

Thats not true. It is actually done at different times. Many times they lie about the time to stay away from protests and and possible trouble makers
