I guess that you mean when your car starts to overheat and steam comes out from the radiator or the reservoir ,? You have a cooling problem in your car and will have to take it to a certified mechanic to properly diagnose the problem,if when your car cools down, you can check the radiator for coolant or lack of it and fill it up. You were not specific as to the year make and model vehicle so that we can at least give you some better directionsin car care, hope that I was helpful.

It can be because you have pure water instead on antifreeze, the system isn't pressurizing because of a leak or a bad radiator cap, or the system isn't colling well enough. Not cooling well enough is usually an old, clogged radiator.
The worst case is that it's not boiling, but exaust gas is getting into the system through a blown head gasket or cracked head.

The engine is overheating, bringing the antifreeze up to its boiling point. There are two possibilities; either there is a problem with your cooling system such as blockage, a bad thermostat, clogged radiator or a failing water pump, or your air conditioning system's condensor is not getting enough air to cool and is heating up your coolant to the point of boiling. Please have your vehicle inspected right away.

It is low on coolant. You might have a leak some place or the thermostat is not working right. There are many things that can be wrong.
