I am a dj and i can assure you that clubbing is a big lie. Behind the music the lights and the smoke is hiding a big game. The game of crowd handling. Crowd handling ability is what every dj is trying to improve.

Every dj knows some songs that will make everyone start dancing but this doesn't mean anything. The goal is to play all these songs at the correct timing so you can keep the crowd in the club untill closing time.

You must play the songs that matches your audience culture. But the way and the programming of when every song is played its the key. You can have a great night without playing all the #1 songs. Correct timing of songs is the key. You must combine Patience and Energy and you must control these two very carefully

@ Miss quest right a top of me: You are ignorant and i don't blame you. You can't understand what are the psychological requirements to be a dj. Dj's are not idiots who drink pills or sniffing drugs. Dj's are very clever people and their brains are running at extreme speeds. I can assure you that every good dj could be a scientist. Dj's are a lot smarter than average people that's why they are paid like scientists.

As a Thrash and Death Metal DJ i find that i could play newer different songs at the start of the night but my customers in particular liked a Thrastastic finale with lots of Iron Maiden, Slayer, Manowar as well as the old favorites like Satyricon, Carcass, At the Gates, Pantera etc. Would make for a fantasitic night... watching all those pissed men dancing to my tunes Hahahaha!!

I would be customer oriented and play what they folks want. After all they come to hear what THEY like, not want anyone else likes.

Depends on how the audience are reacting to your first few songs and how jumpy they are!
