If you can't make any money out of doing it, but you can't stop doing it anyways, even if it costs you your job, friends, etc, then you are an artist.

Take out a piece of paper.
Find a pencil.
Draw something.
There. You're an artist. Now, whether you are a good artist or not is an entirely different case. If you feel in your heart, without a single doubt, that you are an artist then who is to say that you aren't?

You should just know.
But sometimes, as on American Idol, people who can't sing somehow think they can actually sing. I suppose that goes with artists as well.
Sadly, however, people will buy ANYthing if you market it right.
An artist should KNOW they have a talent to draw or illustrate (in this case).

To some degree we are all artists if we can express our inner most feelings or expressions whether it be on paper or through dance or any expression that conveys to the observer what you are feeling.
Its not about approval or money or anything materialistic, if when you are done you feel you have given your best effort to to convey it.

When someone is willing to give something up, whether it is money or services or things, for your work then you are an artist.

i suppose the way my friends knew that they were artists is when they got into a habit of doing it when they were bored or they got praise for doing it so well
i knew i was a poet/writer when i got reported to the counselor for my dark stories and poems, but that's just me

well -lets see now...hmmm,yess thats right -up up -perfect !!! [a slight humming noise/sensation ,temporary of coarse,followed by glorious visionary scenes of unknown "inner"origin follow] yes ! it is a passion and unsatiable hunger
AND...when you dont care what anyone else
thinks.......
