You usually have to prepay at least some, if not all, of the fee.

The doctor you see for your prenatal care is generally the one who delivers your baby. The hope is they get to know you during the pregnancy and are more familiar with your needs, wants, and wishes on the big day.
You DON'T want a stranger to deliver your baby! You might get some big jerk who does episiotomies or is somehow obnoxious. Plus, you want to "pre-register" at the hospital where you are giving birth so you don't have to sit around for 45 minutes filling out paperwork while you are having contractions.
So if you don't want to drive an hour away when you go into labor, find a doctor who is closer to your home.
I would assume your insurance is going to pay for your delivery. Don't you have insurance? If you don't , can you apply for Medicaid or SCHIP? Anyway, I have heard of other doctors requiring you to pay up front for the delivery i f you don't have insurance.

Yes, I had to make a payment at every doctor's visit. My insurance only covered 80% of the delivery. The doctor figured out my portion and I made payments according to what I owed. Do you have any insurance? If not, doctors can ask for payment in advance. They will put you on a payment plan. You don't know if she is going to deliver you, but since she is your regular doctor, you owe her money. If you give her more than you owe her, you will get a credit.

It's pretty standard practice if you don't have insurance to require the majority or all of the expected fees prior to delivery. Most people do use the same doctor (or doctor's office) for both prenatal care and delivery, but if you don't then you should discuss it with your doctor.
If you do have insurance they may also want the portion that won't be covered by insurance to be paid upfront.

That's weird. Do you have insurance? You should contact your insurance company if you do have it. Even if she's just charging for her services your insurance company should still pay a good portion of it. If not then I still don't understand why she would charge you before-I mean, you should have the option at least. I would definitely bring it up to them when you go in for your next appointment.

My cousin, who does not have health insurance, had to prepay for all of her deliveries - about $8,000 due to the county hospital where she would be delivering by her 7th month. I've not heard of this for women with insurance only for women without it.

No, I am confused. Do you have insurance? If yes then they pay for it and if not it seems like you would have assistance and they would pay for it. I don't understand why you would have to pay for it. Maybe they are just saying that your insurance needs to be confirmed so they know who to bill.
Sorry I am not more help.

I guess it depends on your insurance coverage. All I had to prepay was the cost of a circumcision (which was refunded when I had two girls, lol). Best of luck.

that's a bunch of crap. You shouldn't have to do that. Talk it over before you sign, just in case you want to switch, cause that seems weird to me.
