Just about anything is going to be hard work for a 7 year old. Hamster bedding has to be changed about once a week to keep it from stinking, and it can be messy. Also, if he forgets just once to secure the cage lid, the hamster is gone. They are tricky little devils. Also, they don't live long. Maybe a bird, like a parakeet? They have trys that slide out of the very bottom of the cage - you just line them with newspapers and dump it in the trash. But you should hose it off every month or so. They require water and birdseed, and a cuttlebone to file their beaks on, so there isn't a lot of maintenance. Their winds are clipped, so they won't be able to fly if they should get away from your brother. They do make noise though. Pets are a BIG responsibility, not just a little one. As long as he can be gentle, h should have pretty good luck with the parakeet - they're very hardy. But you're not going to find something that involves very little work. Unless you opt for an ant farm, which is another option...

Target is way better than Walmart for tons of reasons. I have found great toys at Target for all age groups. My 8 year old told me that Target is his favorite store and will save all of his money for shopping trips there.

I think they are both good places. My personal experience with selection and price, might lean towards Wal-Mart. Why I like Wal-Marts prices, is, you can get a few things and give them several things instead of just one gift. For example: I just went to a birthday party, and I got her a baby doll $7, a puzzle $1, a coloring book $2, and a small board game $5. She was thrilled. So for $15, I was a hero!!
