you accidently hit the "insert" button and changed the document to "typeover". Just hit the insert button again.

Easiest way to tell if OVERTYPE is turned on --At the very bottom of the Word window is a little-used status bar if OVR is bold overstrike is turned on. Hit the Insert key to toggle off. If it is grayed out, overtype is not turned on.

It sounds like your insert button is turned on. If it is, then it is in typeover mode. So if you are hitting space, it is putting a space where the next letter/word is.

typeover is on press the insert key above the delete key between the standard keys and the numeric keypad

If you go to Tools and then Options..... and then click on Edit and look on the left side and see if overtype mode is checked if it is that is the problem.
