I've had a hospital birth, a freestanding birth center birth and a homebirth.
I *highly* recommend homebirth if the mother is healthy and having a normal pregnancy! It is so much better to not have to go anywhere. You can move around and eat as you want. Listen to your own music, rest in your own bed. You're so much more comfortable! You can rent a birth tub if you want.....we had one and it was great! We had a fire in the fireplace and cuddled on our sofabed afterwards in front of the fire. Very romantic!
ETA:
Midwives are well trained to "risk out" patients who aren't qualified for a homebirth. They know how to watch for any compliations in labor BEFORE it becomes a problem. They should have a back up plan for hospital transfer if there is a problem. Problems don't happen all of a sudden.....there are warning signs that something is wrong. If mom is within 30 mins of a hospital, that is plenty of time to safely transfer if needed. (If you are *IN* a hospital, the guideline for a c/s is "30 minutes - decision to incision.") Midwives carry an oxygen tank, know how to rescusitate an infant, may carry pitocen in case an injection is needed post-partum, have herbs that are useful, can give moms IV antibiotics for GBS+ if needed, etc.

I had all three of my babies in the hospital and thank goodness. The doctors told me my first baby would be about 7 lbs., he was 9lbs. 3oz and had to be delivered by emergency c-section. The second was a planned c-section. With my last baby, I had a placenta percreta and had to have over 20 pints of blood to survive the delivery. Obviously, I would not be alive had I not been in the hospital.
With all of that said, my best friend had a water birth at a birthing center and said it was truly wonderful.
Please put a lot of thought into your decision. Consult your doctor about your health, the size of your baby and your options. Good luck with whatever you decide.

There are other ways of delivering than at the hospital. As long as your pregnancy is going well, there are midwives that can come in and help you throughout your pregnancy. I delivered in a hospital, but I had a friend who had a midwife, and she actually delivered in an inflatable hot tub in her living room. It was very cool and very relaxed. Check out this website. It has some good info.

You could try a "birthing center"
They usually focus on natural child birth (without pain medication) and usually let the labor progress on its own, without inducing, etc. As long as baby and mother are healthy they generally let nature take over. They usually have large tubs where you can have a water birth. I think a water birth sounds wonderful. It is supposed to calm you down, relax you, and help with the pain.
Check online for birthing centers near you!

Some friends of mine gave birth at home... if you ask me that's a little too scary because you just never know. She did have her midwife there, and everything went well for them. I would just think it's scary because there's no special equipment in case of an emergency ya know? But hey-people gave birth at home all the time back in the day! We're just so paranoid now! Lol. At least I am! Lol. Good luck!!

there is always a home birth where a midwife comes to your home, or a birthing center with a midwife, i personally would rather be at the hospital in the event that you or your baby need immediate medical attention, that being said my mother in law and two sisters in law had their kids all at home with no problems. it all comes down to what you are comfortable with

you can use a midwife, they are trained in alternative techniques besides the ones used in hospitals and are on call when you need them.
