Yes I am trying to fix one of my friends computers. When I turn it on it comes up with a screen saying restore my active desk top. When I click to do that it doesn't change. When I try to click on internet explorer or anything else on the computer this is what comes up? Explorer has caused an error in browseui.dll Explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems try restarting your computer. I have restarted the computer and the same thing happens every time. Anyone have any ideas what is wrong and how I can fix it? Thanks

I see some of you have given me good answers about this and I am wondering about the disk you are talking about all I have is a recovery disk for the computer. That is all she gave me when she brought it over here. If I click on the start button that error message comes up. I don't know how to get thru to anything to run a disk, spyware etc...
Thanks

SYMPTOMS
When you start a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the desktop may appear white and the following error message may appear:

Explorer has caused an error in Browseui.dll
You then receive a prompt to change the desktop settings because Active Desktop is turned off. However, when you try to change the settings, the same error message appears, and then the computer stops responding (hangs).

RESOLUTION
To resolve the issue, run the Registry Scan utility:
1. Restart your computer using the Windows Me emergency startup disk.
2. Use the arrow key on your keyboard to select Start Computer Without CD-ROM Support, and then press ENTER.
3. At the prompt type scanreg /fix, and then press ENTER.
4. After the ScanReg process is complete, restart your computer.
The Registry Scan utility finds and removes corrupted registry entries and system files. Those files are then replaced with a working copy of the files.

good afternoon -
go up on your computer to this address : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293174
it will answer your question on browseui.dll problem as for your desktop problem:
The following may explain the problem and provide you with a solution.

Did you recently add an Active Desktop Item? If so,the desktop component which was recently added to the Active Desktop may not be working properly. Internet Explorer disables the Active Desktop so you can remove the new component without the possibility of your computer crashing. Click 'Start' and select 'Settings'. Select 'Active Desktop' and select 'Customize my Desktop...'. Clear the check box to the left of the new Active Desktop component. If necessary, select the 'View my Active Desktop as a web page' check box. Click 'OK'.

Internet Explorer has stopped working or crashed. The Active Desktop causes Internet Explorer to become the new shell for Windows. If Internet Explorer crashes or stops working, the Active Desktop is disabled to prevent your computer from crashing. In the Active Desktop Recovery display, click 'Restore my Active Desktop'. The Active Desktop reappears.

Computer was shut down incorrectly. In the Active Desktop Recovery display, click 'Restore my Active Desktop'. The Active Desktop reappears.
