I like Tide the best, but it is a little costly. In my opinion, you get what you pay for....

It's worth it to spend the extra $5 on Tide. And you could do what I do, use Tide Cold Water and then you don't wash anything in warm or hot water unless absolutely necessary. It definitely saves money on oil for me.
The cheap one that I like the best, before I always used tide was gain. I don't think there's much difference between gain, purex, all, etc.
Another alternative is using oxi-clean in every load with what ever detergent you use. It really really does work well on stains. So then it doesn't matter if you buy the no frills detergent.

I really like Tide but cannot afford it. I buy Arm and Hammer. It work really well and now they have a enviromentally "safer" detergent out. I can afford it too. We have 5 people in our family so there is quite alot of laundry to do!

If you want to treat yourself and don't care if it is a little expensive try "Dreft." You have to look hard in the laundry section of your Grocer. It is the recommended detergent for newborns and children that are susceptible to allergies. Adults Too! I love he smell of it, I love the way it cleans, just wish it were a little cheaper. The last time I used it it was in a pink shade box

I use the All "Free and Clear" and it works better than Tide (in my opinion). It's also cheaper. I buy the gallon jugs at Sam's Club and it's about $6 less. It's also good if you have allergies because it's free of dyes/fragrances/etc. Another thing I've noticed is it doesn't seem to fade out bright colors as quickly.

I use Sam's Club generic in the five gallon pail (about eleven dollars for 160 loads) and my kids and friends bring their stained clothes to me to get out the stains. I also use "Fels Naptha" bar soap for the stains.
I do not mind using a more expensive product if I am convinced that it is worth it. I love Viva p/towels and "prime" steaks.

We buy Sears brand in 20-28 pound tubs - it lasts us for months - my wife loves it - i could care less except when i have to go buy and carry the darn things - it only requires a small scoop of detergent for a large load,

I swear by Arm and Hammer because that stuff works to get really bad smells out of clothes and it's enviromentally friendly since it contains baking soda and not a lot of additives. Plus it's pleasant smelling since Tide and Cheer have too much perfume in theirs and sometimes can be overpowering. Arm and Hammer is fairly cheaper than Tide and Cheer.

All Free and Clear. (I like the Small and Mighty bottle) It has a special ingredient to get rid of dust mites and cat dander and is free of dyes and perfumes. And it's super cheap!

Well, I used to use Ultra, its a Walmart brand, but you can only get it at the super stores now. So when I cant get to the super store, I will buy Gain. Consumer Reports recommends both.
