I have a good friend that I can talk to about anything. A couple of times I paid for her lunch just because I wanted to. We don't meet that often, btw. I suggested that we go to the movies and she said she can't afford it. So I suggested I would pay this time, no problem. It turns out that she also expects me to drive to her area so we go to her local cinema (she would always try to make me drive to her place, rather then meet in the centre as a compromise). Is it the time that I stop being so generous?

Turns out she has money to go out and get drunk in a pub, but does not have money to go to movies with me.

well you might need to put up a guide line . but she could be going though some money problems so be nice. but you shouldn't offer moves and lunch to you know she the money for her share....or just wait till she asks you out for lunch.

It sounds like you might be getting taken advantage of a little bit. I would still go out with the friend if she has the money to pay her own way. If not, you could do something free such as hang out at one or the other's place. I wouldn't keep footing the bill each time, though.
