I think it's a good song, but not great, and I would not consider a classic. The lyrics are misogynistic, and it's very predictable. There is no particular part that stands out, and really nothing that makes it any better than just a "good song", IMHO.

I don't think 'Stairway' is overrated. Sure, there are songs I like more from Zeppelin, but 'Stairway' has appealed to so many people for so long (25 years +) that it's hard to disregard the impact that song has had. It has a great solo and the ride out really moves. More than that, it might be one of rock's few true classics. It was the original power ballad.

If you think about what was on the radio when that song came out - it paved the way for the era of Album Oriented Rock. Never released as a single, it was so much longer than the average - listeners were used to songs that were around two and half minutes from the fifties through the early seventies. With "Stairway to Heaven" Zeppelin opened the door for more intricate, expanded compositions from other groups like Yes and Queen. Even bands like Aerosmith (Dream On) owe a tip of the hat to Zep and 'Stairway' - and they would be the first ones to say so.

Slightly over-rated. But not by much. As a song, it covers a wide range of musical talents and skills: the abilitity to play slow and melodic with beauty and mystery, and then it showcases LZ's ability to sustain a strong, driving intensity for which Led Zeppelin became famously known for. The lyrical poetry is effective at creating a clear strong imagery whilst at the same time leaving plenty to the imagination and for the listener to interpret the song in his/her own way.

Granted, there are many great songs out there.......some even better than Stairway To Heaven - but not many.

It only seems over-rated because all of it's surrounding hype. The years that have passed since it's release has made this song a legend.....and sometimes peopel simply grow tired of hearing about the legends.

My guess would be you weren't old enough to enjoy the music of that era. For old folks my age, it's still a great song. THere are lots of great songs by Zepplin. But it was a time and place thing. You hear it and remember things you were doing at the time. It happens to every generation. THere is music that takes you back. Other don't understand the importance of the music at the time.

nope i think it's one of the best classic rock songs. Zeppelin had many songs that were as good but it's still a classic.

It's less the song, and more the memories it brings back.
