You can very easily turn the table. If WE torture, then THEY will torture and they will have just as much right as we did. Why does this matter to me? Because I was in the military and I still have friends there that I don't EVER want to be tortured.

Ever hear of the Geneva Conventions?

BUSH is the one who let terrorists take over Iraq...people warned him.

Have YOU forgot about 9/11? Iraq didn't have anything to do with it, but that is where all of our money is being sent. What about the open borders and border agents who are being sent to prison for doing their job to protect the US and trying to stop a drug dealer?

Why would you care? Because they will do the very same thing to our people.

Have you read the Geneva Conventions...or how about our Constitution? The US has NEVER condoned torture until Bush came onto the scene.

Sephra...many of those "Detainees" did nothing wrong...the only thing is that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time...many of those people were farmers and the people who gave them the names of "Terrorists" got money for giving the military names. Not that they were true...there WERE NO investigations to see if those people were guilty or not.

I thought "conservatives" believe in the rule of law... I no longer believe that when I see them voting to allow torture.

Confessions gained by torture are often worthless- and no matter the truth gleaned from torture, it's not worth it.

We're no better than the countries to which we "spread democracy" if we can't refrain from torture.

I served under three Commanders-in-Chief and am glad to say that W was not one of them. My first few hours of BASIC were spent in a chapel on Ft. Knox where a chaplain showed films and talked about the Geneva Convention, how POWs are to be treated, and how torture was a serious crime under the law and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Resorting to torture is the domain of tyrants, weaklings, and losers.

First of all, they torture us anyway, no matter what we do!
Secondly, the Geneva Conventions don't cover terrorists.
Thirdly, the "torture" you refer to is not exactly what I would consider torture. They're not shoving bamboo shoots under their fingernails! It's mostly just withholding things or sensory deprivation. And I don't have a problem with it if it helps save American lives. In fact, these "gitmo detainees" are being treated a lot better than many people in our own country! They chose this life and will have to live with the consequences!

EDIT: You people don't seem to realize that you are talking about TERRORISTS! They terrorize people! That's what they do and us being nice to them is not going to change anything. You keep saying that by us torturing (and I use the word loosely) them that they will torture us, but you don't seem to understand that they will torture us regardless! They will keep trying to attack us just because we are not them. They don't like our freedoms, they don't like our religions, they don't like our way of life and they want to wipe us out, period!

EDIT 2: How can you really investigate something like that? It's not like their government will cooperate to find out the truth. I wish it didn't have to be like this, but unfortunately for now it seems (in my opinion) somewhat necessary.

ThE OnLy reason they FORCED this man into confession is because they needed a scapegoat. Americans need someone to blame, someone to point a finger at and this corrupt government gave them just that so no one point fingers at THEM. THis gov is only in it for themselves and will take any measure to protect themselves because they CAN. its so obvious that this confession was somehow forced. Does anyone really think the US went into Iraq for the betterment of them or even us (the US)? Heck NO! it was for the oil!!! no sh** ! EVERYday we hear news about the torturing of innocent bystanders (ABU Ghraib and MANY more). We risk our soldiers lives everyday for what? FOR OIL! FOR POWER!! FOR MONEY!!! and who dies??? OUR SOLDIERS WHO ARE FATHERS AND HUSBANDS AND SONS!! THIS GOV is SCREWED up in every way!!! the confession was garbage!! GARBAGE!!! IT was just a way of making people feel like the culprit was caught to make them feel better.

I agree. With this administrations policies on torture we should not be alarmed or even voice outrage when somewhere in the near future one of our servicemen or women are captured and tortured. After all we are setting the standards, why wouldn't our enemies follow?

Well if you are OK with letting terrorists in Iraq take over, and we get out, then I guess I am OK with pouring water over there heads to get the confesion. We should get rid of gitmo though. I think one M.O.A.B. will do.

Many of us know it for the fact it is. They don't allow the use of pentathol which would get the info we need.
