According to our pediatrician, the rule of thumb is weight of the baby divided by 2. This is how many ounces he needs to have every 3 hours.

No more than 2 ounces at this age...his stomach is the size of a marble! The rule is 2 - 2.5 oz's for every pound the baby weighs. If he is 9 lbs right now, that would be 18 - 22.5 ounces of formula in a 24 hour period. If he is bottle fed, i would suggest a pacifier if he doesnt appear sated after a feeding.

I would stick with 2-3 oz every two hours, the baby's stomach is really small so it won't hold much more than that so they really need to eat smaller amounts more often. Don't deny him though, if he seems like he wants to eat a little more, let him and if he seems hungry before 2 hours, give him some food and that's a good sign that you may need to go up an ounce. Good luck!

my son ate about 3 ozs every 2 and a half hours at that age, so I think yours is doing just fine. You'll know when to increase it when he is still awake at the end of the feeding and he's acting like he wants a little more. If nothing else you could offer a tiny bit more every so often to see if he wants it. Try to be careful not to overfeed him though or he'll spit up a lot. Also if the doctor says he's gaining weight appropriately then I wouldn't worry. Don't be worried about your 80 year old doc, they've obviously been around for a while and I bet they know a whooole lot more than some kid fresh out of med school! Good luck!

That's what my son ate. He is now 8 weeks and eats about 3 1/2 to 4 ounces. Perfectly normal:) And...what's up with all the 80-90 year old pediatricians anyways?? LOL

My nephew, when he was a health 3 weeks old was drinking about 4 oz every 2-3 hours.. which was what the doctor reccomended, and he was just fine :-)
So I would reccomend 2-3 oz every 2 to 3 hours, you could try giving him 4 oz and see how much he drinks in about 5-7 minutes and gauge from there!

Babies will eat what they need. They usually will let you know if they are still hungry. Relax, just give the baby food when he is hungry. Two ounces or between 2-3 every few hours is about right. There isn't and special time between feedings. My babies pretty much regulated themselves. You know your own baby better then the Dr. as you are around him all the time.

at 3 weeks old, your doctor is right. Your baby's belly is only as big as his hand in a fist. As he grows, he will eat more at once and the times will be farther apart. Your baby will not eat more than his belly can hold, and if he does he will puke up the rest, and learn. If you would feel better making a 3 oz bottle and throwing away 1 oz, then feel free, but when baby stops eating, take the bottle away, don't force him to finish.

It really all depends on your baby. Your baby will know when they've had enough or if they need more. 2 to 3 oz every 3 hours is okay.
