We recently moved and the movers scratched the mattress such that it has a small straight tear in it in the center of about the size of 2 inches. How can I fix it?

Using a sewing needle and thread, you could darn it. Make your stitches large enough to get into the good material on either side. You might need a curved needle to do it. I think they are called rug needles. Or you could try an iron on patch, but that might not stick too well. A sew on patch would work though, and might be easier than darning.

Thomas is right - they are upholstery needles.

If it is a good mattress you can sew it, you can buy curved sewing needles for this. I think they are called upholstery needles. If it is an older mattress maybe you should think about replacement. If you repair it just keep the repaired side down on the box spring. Also I think you can buy like pillow tops to add a little softer sleeping comfort to the old mattress. You may want to get a good mattress protector too. Also try to collect from the movers.
