Since most of the fish I'd buy were born and raised in captivity I don't really see this is a problem.
And believe me if I could get some one to take me out of my blue lagoon, providing a place to live a very comfortable life, feed me every day, and clean my house I'd go for it in a heartbeat.
Anybody interested in adoption can e-mail me. LMFAO!!!
Thanks.
E.

Well, some people do not believe in any animal being kept as a pet and I take it nothing anyone posts on here will change your mind.
The majority of freshwater aquarium are captive bred in fish farms in Florida and Asia. They have never seen a "blue lagoon." In fact, many freshwater fish come from muddy rivers and streams. It is true that most saltwater aquarium fish are wild caught from the ocean. However, more and more marine species are being captive bred these days.
Here are the reasons why I believe fish can be kept in captivity with one's morality intact:
1) In a properly maintained aquarium fish live healthier, longer, less stressed lives. The aquarist strives to maintain a disease free, clean environment, removes fish when they are getting picked on by other fish, keeps predators out, provides adequate food, etc. Life in the wild is tough! For one thing, predators are all around and often food is scarce.
2) Many freshwater fish are already extinct in the wild. White Cloud minnows, for example, are no longer to be found in the streams of Asia. They live on only in aquariums. More frehswater fish join their ranks all the time as habitat destruction and pollution continues. Experts predict that by 2050 the world's coral reefs will be gone. If that is true, then our only hope of seeing these animals in the future is to keep them in captivity and strive to breed them.
If people do their homework and are conscientious then there is nothing wrong with having an aquarium. .

Though I understand your concern, I would like to add that when people keep fish that they, as much as possible recreate the fish that they are keeping's natural habitat. Most of the fish unless noted in the hobby found in aquarium stores have been born and raise in captivity for generations. Some hybrids have been in the hobby so long that they have lost some of their inherent behaviors needed to survive in the wild. I'm glad that you don't like idiots keeping fish, but with the disappearing habitats around the world. Aquarium keeping when done right is a very creative, educational and meditative hobby. I just pray that more people seek the knowledge (including you) so we can all be better aquarium keepers worldwide.

This might be true for some fish, but most fish (freshwater, anyway) are captive-bred and raised. They've never seen a lagoon, blue or otherwise.
A lot of the saltwater species HAVE been taken from the wild, which isn't so good, because it depletes their numbers in the wild. It's not as easy to captive-breed saltwater species. Tropical reefs are in bad enough shape without people taking their fauna.

You do realize that most "fancy" fish have been bred for generations in captivity to fix those traits, right? No one is pulling a stargzer goldfish or a tuxedo flame-tail guppy or a pigeon blood discus out of any blue lagoon. Most responsible fish owners take very good care of their pets. Think before you say something stupid and baseless...

I agree and disagree. Some types of fish should NOT be bought or SOLD. You need to go to a higher level to speak "your" truth. I personally own several "wild" caught fish. But the wilds I own are definatly better off where they stand now. They WILL live their entire life span, even though it might not be in a lake or sea. Your true on saying its a box, but compare this ? to dogs and cats and so forth. What would happen if we did not "keep" them? Extinction in alot of cases. ? yourself on how many types of fish would be no longer on this earth if mankind did not intervine. Evolution is happening, and we are a part of it, good or bad. There are a alot of peeps out there that just have tanks, but there are a alot of peeps out there that keep water and fish that you might have never known of, if we didnt step in and save with our "glass boxes". I really hope you dont own any type of pet, because it would be "free" in nature, to get RUN OVER BY A CAR(or caught in a net, or eaten by a predator, etc.) To Magic man( my $'s on him eating some type of meat).

Very seldom are fish taken from the wild to be made pets. They've been bred as pets for years. The only cases I know of are in wild African Cichlids (Rare), and in breeds like dragon gobys, that spend their life buried unless eating, unlike you may find portrayed in a disney movie where all sealife passionately explores the world around them. In reality, life outside the tank for most fish can be comparable to a life in some dark Detroit alley or the middle of a warzone in the mid-east. Very few fry (baby fish) survive under the harsh conditions of the wild. Furthermore, keeping certain breeds in captivity (like any domestic animal) has been proven to increase their lifespan and save certain species (african cichlids) from extinction.
Though my opinion may be biased, I currently care for 3 large aquariums full of very healthy, active fish. Not one was caught in the wild, as you may believe most aquarium kept fish are....

We have a 55 gal. fish aquarium with fancy tail guppies. These fish are freshwater fish and don't live in a blue lagoon. Besides, they have a higher life expectancy here than there.

Shut up you fool!!Fish live more comfortably in an aquarium than inthe wild.In the wild, fish do not get a daily income of food. They are much safer in the tank rather to be eaten by much larger predators.

If the fish are in the pet store already if I don't buy them today it's just someone else tomorrow? They can have a nice life in a large tank with other fishies. Food given to them, clean environment, and an overall nice life! hope I changed your mind, if not good luck with someone else!
