Is there any way of obtaining the music that you would hear being played at department stores/grocery stores etc.? Is there a web-site or anything that allows you to listen to it?

Many of the stores use a special radio service called SCA that is provided by companies like Muzak. This is a for pay service and requires a special fm receiver. Some of the store chains use a commercial form of satellite radio, that includes info about various sales in the stores.

If you just want familiar tunes without vocals. midi files played from the computer will work.

Try an oriental store near you. I have seen some of the cassette some few years ago.
The songs are mostly classical. Some other songs were popularized in the 60's and 70's.
You can make your own collection. For example you can select from Dvorak, Rachmaninoff, Haydin, Mozart, Beethoven, etc. Tsaichovsky and Bach are good candidates for Christmas, e.g. selections fromThe Nutcrakcer and Jesu.

Good Luck!

Department stores/supermarkets play their own collection from the Cds they have or play from WorldSpace or other radio stations, I don;t think there is specific web-sites that give you list of songs in these stores.

http://www.muzak.com

almost every retail chain obtains mixes from the muzak corporation. i don't think they sell them, but you may be able to find out the songs and buy them yourself.
