Something to do with the life of an illegal immigrant. I am opposed to illegal immigration, but if people think these guys come to American and have it easy, their crazy. So many illegals are abused and victimized, they even have brutal gangs that live on top of the rail carts who rape and kill women trying to get to America. They then exploit the children of these poor women. Some would argue they deserve this for coming here illegally, I don't see how this if justified.

It is my not-the-least-bit-humble opinion that, in order to capture and hold interest, a documentary should inform its audience about something they do not already know and have not already seen a zillion times.
1. New subjects and/or new ideas about old subjects - a prime example of this would be Erich Von Daniken's "CHARIOT'S OF THE GODS", which gave people a whole new perspective on archaeological oddities - always stimulate the interest and imagination.
2. Bringing out info about something that has been kept hidden by any of the various facets of "the establishment" can get a trifle risky, but it will definitely gain you an interested audience.
Here's something for you to research:
Run an internet search on these keywords:
"Royal Raymond Rife"
"Georges Lachovsky" or "Multi-wave Oscillator".
You'll find a treasure trove of fascinating and controversial material there, I promise you.
3. Political controversy has some potential as a documentary subject, but it is usually badly one-sided. It's always the liberals bashing the conservatives or the conservatives bashing the liberals and it just ends up restating the same old partisan gripes over and over - making them so predictable that it's disgusting! If someone were to look at BOTH sides with an EQUAL depth of scrutiny, THAT ALONE would be a totally fresh perspective.
4. Look for subjects and ideas that are so obvious that people tend to ignore, overlook or just fail to notice them. For instance, the bias in the media. Think about it - take a controversial issue (almost ANY controversial issue) and ask 20 everyday people at random about it and then watch 20 commentaries and/or editorials about that same issue. You will find almost every time that the opinions are fairly evenly divided among the real-life, working class individuals-on-the-street, but I can almost guarantee that all 20 commentaries/editorials will all be supporting the SAME side of the question!
5. Play the "Devil's Advocate". Strike a blow for the UNpopular side of a hot topic - Like a documentary debunking the concept of "Global Warming".
6. Look at interesting non-fiction books and see which ones would translate well into a filmed media.
7. Last, but certainly NOT least, look into your OWN mind. What interests YOU? If you were contemplating going out to a movie, what would YOU like to see?
Again, the fastest road to success in any line of endeavor is to introduce something desirable that is not ALREADY "out there".

Ur a goofball, Carina.
My advice is that you make a documentary about something that U are passionate about.
Anything else will be limited by your disinterest, and, frankly, you're better off polling with your peers than an audience that you don't know if you or the rest of the world can relate to.
To prove my point, I would like to see a documentary on how laundry detergent has advanced over the years.
In case you haven't noticed, many bottles have switched to this astounding "3X" system which allows that you can wash more loads with smaller bottles and smaller amounts of detergent. PLUS, the company gets to charge the same price that they would if they were giving you three times as much laundry detergent.
Very interesting...

Make a futuristic movie about a man or women becoming a leader in times of trouble, to make things better for all, through innovations, and people sharing and caring. Greed being destroyed by Caring for others, especially children. Tell about Money becoming a obsolete tool and inefficient and people lost its trust and how it has destroyed the people in a Great Nation, because it turned caring hearts into selfish hearts. Tell a story how people didnt need money, but produced things in abundance, which would deminish the power of money as a tool because oversupply undervalued labor and product. Think of things to change lives..

The best documentary YOU could ever possibly make would be one about something YOU are passionate about. If you really are passionatte about the subject, people will enjoy it. I admire your ambition alot, but you probably won't be able to make a good documentary if you aren't making one about the subject of YOUR choice. Ill be sure to remember your name too : ).

Just like he said, the Holocaust. There are far to few people who really know all that happened in the work camps, and the death camps, the ghettos, and those surrounding each of those areas. No matter what you choose, keep it heartfelt.
Good Luck!!!

Jeez.. you've already decided to be a filmaker. Film what you want to film... If it's Iraq or th Indianapolis 500, YOU decide what to film. Do you think Gordon Parks or Melvin Van Peeples asked what others thought... duh, NO!!! If you're going to make a documentary, do something that stirs people up. MAKE PEOPLE THINK AND ROUSE THEM OUT OF THEIR GODDAMNED COMPLACENCY! MAKE PEOPLE THINK ABOUT THEIR ISSUES.
