A simile is a figure of speech in which two subjects are compared to each other often using the words "like" or "as."
ex. "he ran LIKE the wind"
The words "like" and "as" are shortcuts to immediately let you know that you are dealing with a simile but do not make the mistake of thinking that every simile will contain one of those words because they don't have to.
For example....the following sentence is a simile even though "like" or "as" does not appear
"The snow blanketed the earth."- this is a simile because "snow" and "blanket" are still being compared. The sentence can easily be rephrased to read as "The snow was like a blanket over the earth." The two sentences imply the exact same thing even though they are worded differently. Remember, it is the rule that is important and not necessarily the presence of the words "like" or "as."
One must be careful not to confuse a simile with a metaphor because they are very different. Many people use these terms interchangeably but I will explain the difference. Just one tiny word can make the difference between the two. A metaphor does not compare anything at all. It treats the two subjects as if they are one and the same. For example, watch how I change the previous sentence and turn it into a metaphor.
"The snow is Like a blanket over the earth."-simile (comparison)
"The snow IS a blanket over the earth."-metaphor
(no comparison)
Notice that the word "is" makes "blanket" and "snow" one and the same. It no longer compares the two or states that one is "like" the other. Instead, it states that one "IS" the other, therefore making it a metaphor and no longer a simile.

A comparison. For e.g. you are as strong as a lion, as fast as lightning, as deaf as a doorpost, as sweet as sugar.
