NO. It would not affect his +/-. How can it when he is not on the ice. It also wouldn't affect his teammates +/- since they are shorthanded. Also, the team scoring would not get a + since they are on the PP. It zeros all across the board.

No, it doesn't. He's not on the ice when it happens. As a matter of fact, even the guys on the ice won't be affected by a goal. However, if the shorthanded team scores a goal, they will get a +, while the man advantage team will get a negative.
Its never been an issue for me whether the guy in the penalty should have his +/- affected if a goal gets scored. I think its fine the way it currently is.

If a player takes a penalty and the other team scores a goal while he is in the penalty box, it does not go against his plus/minus because he was not on the ice. Actually, power play goals do not affect the plus/minus of any player on the ice, whether they are on the defending team or the offensive team. It shouldn't be counted against him because he caused the penalty because he is already being punished for committing the penalty by sitting in the penalty box for two minutes. Basically, his punishment is that he cannot play for the duration of his penalty, so he doesn't need to be penalized in any other way, shape or form for what he did wrong. The punishment needs to fit the crime, and in the case of minor penalties in the NHL, sitting for two minutes in the penalty box is the just punishment for such crimes.

Whoa. We've got some controversy here! I am not sure how some of these guys came up with "yes." There are NO minuses for the team that is shorthanded. You can only get a minus if you are even-strengthed or on the power play. You CAN get a plus if your team scores short-handed. In any case, the guy in the box is NOT on the ice anyway. So he would get no minus. Neither would his teammates.

No it doesn't, the first two answers are WRONG.
And no it shouldn't, either. Whether he is "responsible" for the Goal being scored is certainly debatable, teams kill about 80% of their penalties and if they don't there were four players on the ice who STILL don't get a -.
And the +/- is what it is. You can't look at a list of +/- leaders and just "know" who the best defensive players are. You have to weigh in a lot of other things like whether or not they are on good teams or not, are they paired with or are they themselves scorers, is the Goaltending behind them good or bad and many other things.
Besides which penalty minutes are recorded and provided to us anyway.

If you look at the first 3 answers, the WRONG answers have a thumbs up and the RIGHT answer has a thumbs down.
This question is not a matter of opinion, it is a matter of what the rules are.

Bob Loblaw is correct. +/- is only affected when you are at full strength (or scoring a short-handed goal). But the guy in the box isn't getting a plus, because he isn't on the ice.

i watched the ducks and blue jackets game last night and they happened to discuss that very same question,in reference to federov he had played defense the game before and ended up with a minus, last night he was in the penalty box when ducks scored and the announcers said at least that will not effect his +/- status. they said when you are in the penalty box it does not count against you!!!!by the way the jackets played good hockey last night to bad they can't be consistant!!!!

If a team is on a power play and they score, or if any goal is scored (a shorty) it does not affect anyone's +/-.
