Evolution of Slam Poetry?

Hey I need some info on how Slam Poetry evolved into a mainstream thing. Info is appreciated and links would be great also.

I'm not sure it is mainstream. but I went to the deaf poetry jam once, and it seemed to derive from rap, and street culture.
