It is giving me a message : No Dvd compatible recorder detected. You can enable DVD based projects by checking the option enable image recorder for all supported media types in the application prefrences. My question is how do i do this? I can't find the application preferences.

Given that you have a DVD burner installed properly & that it is in working order ....
Go to the manufacturer site for you DVD writer & download the latest firmware update...that should fix it.
Also, make sure you are running the latest version of Nero 7. Go to their site for free updates.
